Propagation tents and kits cover the first two to three weeks of a grow, when the plant has no root system and cannot regulate itself. What it needs is warmth, high humidity and gentle light – conditions a flowering tent is actively bad at providing.

Tent, propagator, or both?

• A heated propagator – tray, humidity dome and a heat mat – is enough for a windowsill batch of seeds or a few cuttings. Cheapest route in.
• A propagation tent is short and shallow, holds several trays, and lets you control light and humidity independently of the room. See propagation tents for the tents on their own.
• A complete kit pairs the two with a low-wattage light and a timer, which is what most people actually want if they are starting from nothing.

What matters at this stage

• Bottom heat. Roots form on temperature, not light. A heat mat under the tray is the single highest-impact thing you can buy.
• Humidity near saturation. Cuttings have no roots and lose water through their leaves. A dome or a sealed tent keeps them alive until they root.
• Low light. A cutting cannot use a 600W fixture. A small LED or a fluorescent bar at distance is correct.
• Short heights. Propagation tents are deliberately shallow so the light sits close and the volume stays warm and humid.

Moving them on

Once rooted, cuttings go into a veg space and then to flower. A small grow tent makes a good intermediate step, or straight into a 1.2m tent. Running propagation permanently alongside flowering in one footprint is what grow tents with shelves are for.
