Air pruning, and why it matters

In a solid plastic pot, roots hit the wall and circle. Over time they strangle themselves and the plant stops taking up what you feed it. Fabric and Air-Pots expose the root tips to air at the edge, which stops them there and forces the plant to branch instead – a much denser root mass in the same volume. The trade-off is faster drying, so you water more often.

What size

Going too big too early is a common mistake – a small plant in a big pot sits in wet medium it cannot use, and the roots suffer for it. Pot on progressively.

Do not skip the saucers

Run-off on a tent floor is how you get root disease, fungus gnats and a warped floor. Saucers or a full tray under everything, emptied rather than left to sit – standing water is worse than no saucer at all. See run-off and work trays.
