Rockwool is spun mineral fibre, and it is the most controllable medium there is. It holds no nutrition, buffers nothing, and drains to a precise air-to-water ratio – which means the plant gets exactly what you give it, and nothing else is happening in the pot.

Why professionals use it

• Total control. Inert and consistent from batch to batch, so a feed programme is repeatable.
• Exceptional air content. Even saturated, rockwool holds air around the roots. Root growth in a well-run slab is faster than any other medium.
• Sizes that step up cleanly. Propagation plug into a 4in block into a slab, with no transplant shock because you never disturb the roots.

And why it is not for beginners

Because it forgives nothing. There is no buffer, so a pH or EC mistake reaches the root immediately. It needs feeding several times a day once plants are established, which realistically means an automated dripper system rather than a watering can. If you want fast growth without that commitment, coco gets you most of the way.

Conditioning it first

New rockwool is highly alkaline – around pH 8 – and must be soaked before use in water adjusted to roughly pH 5.5 for 24 hours. Skipping this is the single most common rockwool failure. Do not squeeze it out afterwards; squeezing collapses the structure and destroys the air content that makes it work.

What pH for rockwool?
5.5 to 5.8 at the feed, and check the run-off – that is what the root is actually seeing.

Can I reuse it?
Not really. Old root mass cannot be removed and the structure degrades. Treat it as single use.

Is it safe to handle?
Wear gloves and avoid breathing the dust when cutting dry slabs, same as any mineral fibre. Wet it first and there is no dust.
