Beneficials, bacteria and inoculants are live or dormant micro-organisms you add to the root zone. They are not a fertiliser – they make what is already there more available, protect roots from pathogens, and break down dead root material before it becomes a problem.
The three families
Mycorrhizae. Fungi that physically bond to the root and extend its surface area many times over. Applied once, at transplant, directly onto the root ball. They do not work if you drench them in fungicide afterwards.
Bacteria (bacillus and similar). Colonise the root surface, outcompete pathogens for space, and convert locked-up nutrients into available forms. Added regularly through the feed.
Trichoderma. A fungus that specifically suppresses pythium and root rot. The single most useful thing you can add to a recirculating system.
Where they help most
System
Worth it?
Living soil / organics
Essential – the biology is the nutrient delivery
Coco
Yes – inert medium, so you are building biology from nothing
Recirculating hydro (DWC, NFT)
Yes, mainly for root rot suppression
Run-to-waste with sterile feed
No – you are running sterile deliberately, pick one approach
What kills them
This is the part product labels leave out. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine-heavy tap water, silver-based sterilants and most root-zone cleaners will wipe out an inoculant within hours. Run either a biological root zone or a sterile one, not both. If you are on mains water, let it stand or filter it before adding biology – see pH and EC management.
What we stock
Inoculants and enzyme products from Ecothrive, Plant Success, Hygrozyme, Athena, Canna, Great White and Mills. Closely related: enzymes for breaking down dead root matter, and root stimulators for the hormonal side. In soil, pair with organic plant nutrients.
Beneficials FAQs
Mycorrhizae or bacteria? Different jobs. Mycorrhizae extend the root system and go on once. Bacteria protect and cycle nutrients and go in regularly. Most growers use both.
Will they fix root rot? Trichoderma suppresses it and prevents recurrence. It will not rescue a reservoir that is already 25°C and brown – fix the temperature first.
Can I use them with mineral nutrients? Yes. They are compatible with mineral feeds; it is sterilants they cannot survive.
