Trimmers

Trimming machines do in an hour what takes a person a day. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on your volume – below a certain scale a machine is an expensive way to get a slightly worse finish, and above it hand trimming stops being realistic.

When a machine makes sense

The main types

• Bowl trimmers – a hand-cranked or motorised bowl with a blade under a grate. Cheap, effective, and the usual first machine. Best on dry material.
• Tumblers – material rolls through a rotating mesh drum past a cutting blade. Gentler, higher throughput, and the format most commercial machines use. Toms Tumbler is the reference point.
• Bladeless / friction tumblers – no cutting edge at all; leaves are broken off by tumbling against mesh. Slower but far less damage to the material.

Wet or dry?

Check what the machine is designed for before buying. Wet trimming machines handle fresh, turgid material immediately after cutting. Dry trimmers work on material that has already hung for a week and is more fragile. Using the wrong one either jams the machine or shreds the crop.

The honest trade-off

No machine matches a careful hand trim. Machines tumble, and tumbling knocks material off – you accept a slightly rougher finish in exchange for hours of your life back. Most growers who buy one end up machine-trimming the bulk and hand-finishing the best of it.

Practical notes

• Clean it immediately. Resin sets hard. Once it does, blades bind and the machine tears rather than cuts.
• Do not overload the drum. Small batches trim better and faster than one big load.
• Keep the offcut. Most machines separate trim into a collection tray – see trim bins.
