Fibrgro make pre-buffered rockwool in quick fill bags and propagation cubes. The word that matters there is buffered – it arrives ready to plant.
Why buffered rockwool is worth paying for
Raw rockwool is highly alkaline, around pH 8, and has to be soaked for 24 hours in water adjusted to roughly 5.5 before it is safe to use. Skip that step and the first feed sits at a pH the roots cannot work with, which is the single most common rockwool failure. Fibrgro have done the conditioning already, so you plant straight into it.
The range
- Quick fill bags in 1, 2, 3 and 5 gallon – open-top formats you plant directly into.
- Propagation cubes at 4in x 4in x 2.5in for cuttings and seedlings – see propagation media.
Running rockwool
Feed at pH 5.5-5.8 and check the run-off, because that is what the root is actually seeing. Rockwool holds a lot of water while still holding air, so little and often beats a soaking – which usually means a dripper system once plants are established. Do not squeeze it out; squeezing collapses the structure and destroys the air content that makes it work.
