EC fans use brushless motors with electronically commutated control, which means genuinely variable speed rather than the two or three steps an AC fan gives you. They cost more up front and are quieter, more efficient and more controllable in every way that matters.

Where the saving actually comes from
An AC fan on a dimmer still draws close to full power when turned down – you lose the noise but not the bill. An EC fan at 50% speed draws roughly a quarter of the power, because fan power falls with the cube of speed. A room running 12-18 hours a day makes that difference back over a year.
The real reason to buy one
Automation. An EC fan wired to a controller runs at the speed the room needs – slow and silent overnight, ramping up when the lights and the heat come on. That holds temperature far more steadily than a fan running flat out constantly, and it is much quieter for the eleven hours a day when nobody needs it at full tilt.
