The short version

The best-selling hydroponic nutrient brand in the UK in 2025 was Athena, for the second year running - measured by how many separate growers ordered it, not by how many bottles went out the door.

Figures come from our own UK order book: online and mail orders across the 2025 calendar year, with counter sales and anything given away free excluded. Below: the same list by bottles sold, the best add-on brands, the flower hardeners, and who moved against 2024.

Right - year two of us going through the order book to find out what the best hydroponic nutrients in the UK really are. Not our opinion, not a sponsored list. Just what you lot actually bought.

Last year's rankings went down better than we expected, so we've done it again. Bigger pile of data this time, plus two sections we didn't do in 2024: the add-on brands that don't make a base feed at all, and the flower hardeners. And because everyone's first question last year was "yeah but did they go up or down", every chart now carries the movement against 2024.

Quick word on how we've counted it, because it matters. "Most popular" means the highest number of separate orders. One bloke buying forty bottles of the same thing doesn't make it the nation's favourite - it makes it the most sold, which is a different chart, and we've done that one too so you can see where the two disagree. Spoiler: they disagree quite a lot.

We've stripped out anything that would skew it. Online and mail orders only - nothing from the Croydon shop counter, because a walk-in buying what's in front of them tells you about our shelves, not about what growers choose. And nothing free counts. Not promo giveaways, not seeded samples, not comped orders. If it went out at nothing, it isn't a vote. Same rule applied to the 2024 numbers, so the up and down arrows are honest rather than flattering.

No hard numbers on the charts - you'll understand why we keep those to ourselves. The bars are all to scale though, so you can see exactly how far ahead the leaders are. And if a bar looks embarrassingly short, that's because it is.

Most popular nutrient brands

Ranked by how many separate growers ordered each brand across 2025. Base feed brands only - the add-ons get their own table further down.

up from 2024 down from 2024- unmovedNEW first appearance
Why we reckon it landed like this

Athena, unmoved at the top. Two years running, clear of second place on both charts. It's a short, simple line - Core, Grow, Bloom, a Stack and not much else to get wrong - and it has an enormous amount of grower content behind it. When people don't want to think about feeding, they buy the line that's hardest to mess up. At this rate we're just going to laminate the chart.

The top three didn't budge at all. Athena, Advanced Nutrients, CANNA - identical to 2024. That's less boring than it sounds: it means the brands people commit to, they stay committed to. Nutrients are a habit, not a purchase.

Athena vs CANNA, since you keep asking. Athena outsells CANNA online by a comfortable margin on both charts - but flip to counter sales and CANNA wins outright. Read that as two different customers rather than a verdict: Athena is what people research and order online, CANNA is what people have always picked up in person. Both are excellent. Neither is going anywhere.

Hydroponic Research up four, the biggest climb in the national table. Our best guess is powder. Veg+Bloom is concentrated dry feed, so you're not paying to ship water around the country, and with everyone watching costs that maths has got very persuasive.

FloraFlex up five. That'll be the system dragging the feed along with it. Once you've bought into the FloraFlex ecosystem - caps, matrix, quick fills - adding their nutrients to the basket is the path of least resistance.

BioBizz down five. The one genuine faller near the top. Organic soil growing has been squeezed from both sides: cheap coco-and-mineral on one, and living-soil brands on the other. Worth saying the range itself is as good as it ever was - this looks like the category moving, not the brand slipping.

Most sold nutrient brands

Same year, same orders - but counted by bottles out the door instead of by people. Watch the middle of the table.

Why we reckon it landed like this

BAC jumps from 8th to 5th when you count bottles. Fewer customers, much fuller baskets. BAC is a full organic programme rather than a single hero bottle, so people don't buy one - they buy the whole shelf.

Hydroponic Research climbs six. Same powder story, but louder. When a brand rises faster on bottles than on buyers, it's usually because the people using it are running bigger rooms.

Athena's lead narrows on this chart. Advanced Nutrients is much closer here than on the popularity table, which tells you the AN buyers are deep in a multi-bottle programme - Big Bud, Bud Candy, Overdrive, the lot. Athena wins on how many people; AN closes the gap on how much they carry home.

Two charts, same orders, different winners in the middle. Popular and best-selling are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where the interesting bit lives.

Why we reckon it landed like this

The biggest single move in the whole article is in London. House & Garden has gone from the back of the pack to top of the capital - a thirteen place jump. Meanwhile CANNA, which won London in 2024, has fallen clean out of the top eight. London does not do loyalty.

London still refuses to follow the national table. The country's number one brand doesn't top the capital, same as last year. Plagron punches far above its national weight here too, and the whole chart is bunched - no runaway leader, just eight brands elbowing each other.

Terra Aquatica has been dethroned in Liverpool. Last year we wrote it up as the surprise story of the rankings - it had doubled everyone in that city. This year it isn't in Liverpool's top eight at all. Brutal. Sometimes a chart is one very enthusiastic customer, and we'd rather say that than pretend otherwise.

Manchester is still a FloraFlex town, even losing top spot to CANNA. It's the only city where the system brand ranks that high - somewhere in Greater Manchester there's a very committed household getting through an unreasonable quantity of quick fills. Respect.

Liverpool's chart is so tight it's less a league table and more a group hug. Top four separated by almost nothing, and five of the eight are brand new to the city's table.

Most popular add-ons

New for 2025. Brands that don't make a base feed at all - the rooting gels, silicas, microbes, enzymes and boosters you buy alongside whatever you're already running.

Why we reckon it landed like this

Clonex is untouchable, and it isn't close. More growers ordered a Clonex product than any add-on brand going - a 50ml tube of Clonex rooting gel outsold entire nutrient ranges on customer count. It's been the default rooting gel for decades, it costs less than a takeaway, and nobody has ever finished a tube and thought "I'll try something else." Browse the rest of the propagation and cloning range if you fancy a change, but you won't.

Root inoculants have gone properly mainstream. Plant Success up three into second, with Psycho Myco also in the top ten. Five years ago mycorrhizae was a curiosity; now it's on the shopping list next to the cal-mag.

Silica is the additive story of the year - but the crown changed hands. Grow Genius and Power Si sell essentially the same thing, and Power Si has dropped three places while Grow Genius holds the higher spot. Mono-silicic acid has gone from exotic to competitive, and when two products do the same job, price starts doing the talking.

Grenade and Plant Life arrive from nowhere. Both brand new to the table. Worth watching next year - new entrants either double or vanish, there's rarely an in-between.

Flower hardeners & finishers

Also new this year. Bloom enhancers, bud hardeners and PGR flower hardeners sold for ornamental use, ranked the same way - by how many separate growers ordered them. Worth reading our PGRs: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly before you dive in.

Why we reckon it landed like this

It is a dead heat. Once every comped and free bottle is stripped out, Flower Bomb and OG Rapid finish 2025 exactly level on customers - you could not get a cigarette paper between them. Given OG Rapid was one of our three best-selling bottles of 2024 outright, hauling it back to a tie is a serious year of work by the newer brand. Ask us again in twelve months.

Now flip it to bottles sold and the table detonates. Fruit Machine sits sixth on customers but goes straight to number one on units - a handful of buyers taking an enormous amount of stock. That's trade, not hobby growers. Eleven orders, ninety-odd bottles. Either someone's running a very big room, or there's a Fruit Machine appreciation society we've not been invited to.

The rest of the table barely moved. Positions three through six are identical to 2024. This is a category where people find one that works and stop shopping.

The boring but important bit

How we counted it

Popular means people, not bottles. An order with three bottles of one brand counts once. It measures how many growers picked a brand, not how much they hauled home.

Online and mail orders only. Counter sales at the Croydon shop are excluded, same as last year. If we included them the table would look quite different - CANNA in particular does far better in person than online.

Nothing free counts, in either year. If a bottle went out at £0 it is not in these charts - that covers promotional giveaways, seeded samples and fully comped orders alike. We re-ran 2024 on the identical rule, which is why a few positions here will not match last year's article exactly.

Base feed or add-on. A brand goes in the main charts if it sells a base feed - a grow, a bloom, an A+B. Brands selling only additives, silicas, microbes or rooting products go in the add-ons table. Nothing appears in both.

Bar length is relative to the leader in each chart. Actual figures stay commercially confidential - sorry, but our competitors read this too. City charts cover orders with a delivery address only and rest on smaller numbers, so treat those as indicative rather than gospel.

Frequently asked

What are the best hydroponic nutrients in the UK?
On our 2025 order book the most popular is Athena, followed by Advanced Nutrients and CANNA. "Best" depends on your setup though: Athena and Hydroponic Research suit growers who want a short, simple line; CANNA and House & Garden suit coco and soil; BioBizz and BAC are the picks if you want organic. All ten in the list above are stocked and all ten have a real following.
Why doesn't this match your 2024 article exactly?
Because we re-ran 2024 using this year's method rather than quoting last year's chart. Same zero-pound exclusions, same base-feed-versus-add-on split, applied to both years. It means the arrows are a fair like-for-like comparison instead of a comparison between two different sets of rules.
Is the most popular brand the best one?
No. It's the most ordered. Popularity tracks availability, price, marketing and habit at least as much as it tracks quality. Plenty of excellent brands sit low on these tables simply because fewer people have tried them.
Why won't you show the actual numbers?
Because they're our sales figures, and we'd rather our competitors didn't have them. The bars are drawn strictly to scale against the leader in each chart, so the relative picture is completely honest.
Does this cover the whole UK market?
It covers our orders, which after seven years and a lot of them is a decent measuring stick - but it's one shop, not the national market. Take it as a well-informed snapshot rather than an industry census.
What are you expecting for 2026?
Powdered feeds to keep climbing on cost per litre, root inoculants to carry on going mainstream, and at least one of this year's brand-new entries to disappear entirely. Ask us again in twelve months and we'll tell you we were right.

Now go and feed something.

Every brand in these charts is in stock at The Hydro Bros, Croydon - online or over the counter.
