Roof grow tents - also called loft tents - solve the one problem a standard tent cannot: a ceiling that is either too low or not flat. At around 180cm tall with a shaped top, they fit under sloping rafters where a 200cm square tent simply will not go.
Why a standard tent will not fit a loft
Most tents are 200cm tall and need clearance above that for hangers. A typical loft has 200-230cm at the ridge and far less at the eaves, plus purlins and joists in the way. Even where a standard tent technically fits, you lose the whole edge of the floor to the slope and end up with a tent you cannot walk into.
A roof tent is built for that geometry: lower overall, angled at the top, and designed to sit with its tall side against the ridge.
Measure these before you order
Height at the ridge and at the eaves. Both. The difference tells you which way round the tent has to sit.
Where the joists and purlins run. These decide your usable footprint more often than the floor does.
Hatch and stair access. A tent box is long. Getting it up is a real constraint, and so is getting a 30L pot of wet medium down.
Floor loading. Water is heavy. A 100L reservoir is 100kg in one spot on joists that were built for insulation and boxes.
Running a tent in a loft
Heat is the main issue. Lofts swing hard - freezing in winter, very hot in summer under the roof. Plan extraction and see climate control.
Insulate before you grow, not after. Anything you can do to the roof space pays back every cycle.
Keep it low-wattage. LED rather than HPS suits a confined roof space, and needs less hanging distance too - useful when you have none to spare. See grow room lights.
