Air Stones for Hydroponics
3 products

Air stones for hydroponics raise dissolved oxygen in your nutrient reservoir, creating a steady stream of fine bubbles that keeps water moving, roots healthy and uptake consistent. Browse disc stones, bar stones, ceramic diffusers and nano bubble options for DWC, RDWC and tank aeration. Pair with a quiet, reliable hydroponic air pump for best results.
Why use air stones in hydroponics?
- Increase dissolved oxygen to support fast root growth
- Reduce stagnation and help prevent root problems
- Improve nutrient uptake and overall plant resilience
- Works with DWC, RDWC, flood and drain, and plain reservoirs
Types of air stone
Disc and round diffusers have a compact footprint and a broad bubble spread, which suits buckets and small tanks. Bar and cylinder stones give a linear bubble curtain for long tanks and troughs. Ceramic and fine-pore stones use a denser material, so bubbles are finer and dissolved oxygen potential is higher. Nano bubble stones take that further with ultra-fine bubbles and longer contact time.
Choosing the right one
- Reservoir size: larger tanks need bigger discs or multiple bars to avoid dead zones.
- Bubble fineness: ceramic and nano give finer bubbles and better oxygenation, but need a stronger pump to drive them.
- Pump match: check the L/min output and the number of outlets on your pump before buying.
- Maintenance: stones last longer if you rinse them between runs and pre-filter the air.
Quick sizing guide
| Reservoir size | Suggested stones | Typical airflow |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50L | 1 x 4in disc or 1 small bar | 4-8 L/min |
| 50-100L | 1 x 6in disc or 2 small bars | 8-12 L/min |
| 100-200L | 2 x 6in discs or 1-2 long bars | 12-20 L/min |
| 200L+ | Multiple discs or bars spaced evenly | 20 L/min+ |
Split airflow with quality tees and manifolds for even distribution, and see flexi tanks and reservoirs for the tank itself.
Air stone FAQs
Do I need an air stone in hydroponics?
In DWC and RDWC, yes - air stones maintain dissolved oxygen and reduce stagnation. In other systems they are still worth having for tank health.
How many do I need?
At least one per small reservoir up to 100L. Scale up by tank size and shape; multiple stones prevent dead zones at the corners.
What size should I choose?
Match the disc or bar to your reservoir footprint and your pump's L/min. Finer-pore stones need a stronger pump to perform properly.
Air stone or diffuser - what is the difference?
The terms are used interchangeably. Ceramic and nano diffusers typically create finer bubbles and raise dissolved oxygen more efficiently.
