What you give up under £150

• Frame gauge. Usually 16mm rather than 22-25mm. Fine at small and mid sizes, worth thinking about if you intend to hang a heavy filter.
• Zips. The most common failure point on a cheap tent. Budget zips wear faster and are more likely to leak light at the corners.
• Mylar thickness. Thinner lining is slightly less reflective and easier to tear when you are feeding cables through.
• Warranty and spares. Premium brands sell replacement poles and connectors. Budget tents usually do not.

What you do not give up

Lightproofing, reflectivity, ducting ports and a floor tray are standard across the range. A budget tent grows the same plant as a premium one - it just has a shorter service life and less tolerance for heavy kit.

When budget is the right call
