Reviews of seaweed extract biostimulants (for example Khan et al., 2009) describe growth-promoting substances in these extracts, including cytokinins, auxins and betaines, and later reviews note that hormone content varies widely between extracts. The RHS takes a careful line: seaweed products are not true fertilisers because their nutrient content is not guaranteed or standardised, and some are sold on the strength of natural growth regulators such as cytokinins.
